District #56 believes all students should have the option of attending college upon graduation from high school.  The Measures of Academic Performance test (MAP) is one measurement tool that can be used to chart each student’s path towards that goal.  The information contained on the ABC Chart shows minimal performance targets.  Please note, it  is not uncommon for District #56 students to exceed these targets.  

The ABC’s of keeping your student on track for college:

Academic progress, as measured by MAP scores, is a tool that can assist students with keeping on pace for enrollment in college preparatory classes in high school.

Put forth the Best effort possible.  Active participation in class, timely completion of all assignments and a willingness to accept challenges will keep a student on track. 

Chart academic growth.  Compare your child’s RIT score with the Target Spring RIT score on the ABC Chart.  Are they on pace?

What can a parent do?

Gurnee School District #56 is striving to prepare all of its graduates for college preparatory courses upon entry to high school.  If your child is off pace, according to the ABC Chart you have received, please consider the following:
 
Reading:
 
o    How important is reading in your home?
o    Does your child read at home?  Daily?
o    Does your child read for both pleasure and information?
o    Does your child observe you reading in the home?
o    Do you read for both pleasure and information?
o    Are there books, magazines and newspapers available to your child?
 
o    Does your child read to you an article while you are busy doing household chores?
o    Does he/she have a library card?
o    Does your family still share a book together?
(Children are never too old to be read to)
o    Does your child read directions for assembling an object?

Mathematics:
 
Does your child use mathematics in their every day life?
o    Count change
o    Measure for household projects
o    Pay at the store
o    Plan portions for family dinners
o    Follow recipes (double or half the recipe)
o    Add air to the tires – read the gauges
o    Map out a road trip in miles/kilometers
o    Plan shorter trips
o    Track expenses for a vacation
o    Calculate interest on the $10 they borrowed
o    Set a budget for the family or their own “big” purchases
o    Have a savings account
o    Calculate the area of the yard they just mowed

•    Do you solve problems for your child or do you allow them time to figure the answer out on their own?
•    Do you only use calculators, computers, GPS systems and the like to model problem solving?  Step back from modern conveniences once in a while to model good old fashion problem solving.
